The work operates in deep tonal contrast — a near-black ground from which form slowly emerges. Gestural marks suggest the first moment of directed energy: not yet structured, but no longer formless. The surface holds both darkness and the first intimation of light.
Birth of Clarity is the primal gesture of the entire Lucid Works series. It represents the moment before coherence — when awareness exists but has not yet organised itself into pattern. The dark ground is not absence; it is potential. What emerges is not light opposed to darkness, but lucidity arising from within it.
Constructed in multiple acrylic glaze passes (4–6 passes). Graphite veils applied between layers to create tonal depth. Micro-spatter used to introduce controlled noise at the surface. Each layer allowed to cure fully before the next application.
Lucid I is the threshold work — the canvas that precedes all that follows. Its function within the cycle is to establish the ground from which emergence becomes possible. Without this darkness, there is no arc. Without this beginning, there is no Cycle I.
